Mani Peninsula
Mani Peninsula, the southernmost tip of Mainland Europe, is a place that gives you the impression that you have reached the edge of the world or at least that the world as you knew it ends here and another that you cannot even imagine begins. It is no coincidence that the ancient Greeks believed that one of the gates of Hades lay at its southernmost tip, Cape Tainaro.
The barren, arid and rocky soil of the peninsula, the suffocatingly limited natural resources and its historical connection with Ancient Sparta indelibly sealed the physiognomy of its inhabitants and created a society with inviolable codes of honour, constant armed conflicts between them, but also customs such as the vendetta and obituaries, long verses in honour of the dead.
Filled with unexplored beauties even today, Mani impresses the visitor with the coupling of the wild landscape with the dazzling light, the stone tower houses that literally dive into its turquoise waters and of course with its simple but delicious cuisine.
98 of the 118 designated traditional settlements of the Peloponnese are in this area! The villages of Mani retain their traditional architecture and their unique lifestyle. Nestled among the inaccessible mountains, beautiful and imposing, they are waiting to tell us their story!
