Monemvasia Gytheio
Medieval Monemvasia with its cobbled alleys looks like it is taken from a movie. In its long history, this strange ‘Rock’ was the ‘bone of contention’ among the powerful of the Middle Ages. It was founded by the Byzantine emperor Mauritius in the 6th century and since then it has been inhabited continuously. It was conquered by the Franks, the Venetians, the Ottomans etc. They all left their mark on the cosmopolitan Monemvasia, which was one of the most important and rich ports in the entire Mediterranean.
