Starting point
Sparta or your accommodation
Duration
6 hours
Recommendation
Suggested departure time: 8.00 am (mainly July & August, due to high temperatures).
Flat non-slip shoes (not flip flops), sports or mountaineering shoes, water, sunscreen and a hat for the summer months.
The ascent to the Upper Town of Monemvasia is not recommended for people who experience lower limb problems, instability, respiratory and heart problems.
During our tour we visit the Lower Town where we will see the important churches, the lighthouse, the high walls, the old low arches, arches and coats of arms that give the impression of a fantasy city which has not been altered by time. Then, with those of you who wish, we will go up to the Upper Town, to the church of Agia Sophia enjoying the view of the city from above and the endless blue of the Myrtoan Sea. Free time for relaxation, shopping and coffee.
In the area of Monemvasia the visit to a winery is a must!
From the 13th century Monemvasia has been famous for its wines and especially the white sweet wine malvasia, the ‘noble’ wine that was traded by the Venetian and Genoese merchants and for many centuries was the main source of wealth for the city.
At the winery, we will have the opportunity to taste 4 award-winning wines of the region (1 dry rosé, 1 red dry, 1 white dry and 1 naturally sweet, the famous “Malvasia”), which are accompanied by selected local products (vegetarian/vegan options will be available upon prior request). There will also be a short tour of the winery.
