Parori – Panagia Zagouna – Faneromeni Monastery – Church of Transfiguration of the Saviour – Lagadiotissa – Parori (circular).
Our hike will start from the village of Parori (it is 6 km from Sparta). After about 45 minutes of continuous ascent but also an amazing view of the valley of Evrotas and Sparta, we will reach the cave monastery of Panagia Zagouna. It is a cave monastery which dates back to 1754, ‘nested’ in sharp and steep rocks. After a short stop, we will continue our ascent to the Monastery of Faneromeni near the village of Anavryti, a 19th century monastery that nowadays hosts a monk. After visiting the Monastery and cooling off we will start the descent to the Transfiguration of the Saviour, crossing part of the European path E4. Our last stop before Parori is the cavernous church of Panagia Lagadiotissa, probably a 12th century church.
